FOR AN EASY, inexpensive way to refresh your bathroom, consider
changing your shower curtain.
We often take them for granted, but shower curtains are at the center
of a bathroom's decor. Often times it's the largest thing in the
room; they set the mood and the style for the entire bathroom. Not
only that but since a bathroom is basically functional, a shower
curtain is one of the few opportunities to make a statement.
Shower curtains are available in many different styles, colors
and designs. They are also available in a variety of materials,
such as vinyl, cotton, polyester, linen and plastic. To get an idea
of just how big a selection is available, stop into your local Bed
Bath and Beyond store, where you'll find some 50 feet of shower
curtains on display.
The most popular, however, are fabric shower curtains. These can
be made not only from standard percale, but also denim, satin, brocade
and terry cloth, among many other fabrics. Most fabric shower curtains
are machine washable, meaning they are easy to care for. Most decorative
types require the use of a shower curtain liner, also available
in many lengths.
Fabric shower curtains can come in any style, from simple to sophisticated.
They can be solid, a print, or with appliques or embroidery. The
possibilities are nearly endless.
Some are shaped like traditional flat-paneled curtains; others
are more creative in style. Some fabric shower curtains mimic the
look of window drapes, complete with top valance and pull-back sides.
These curtains are available with different attachment methods
as well — button, tie, Velcro, snap and the traditional hook.
If you are feeling creative, fabric shower curtains
are an easy do-it-yourself project. My sister and I made a wonderful
shower curtain treatment for her bathroom. We simply screwed some
decorative hooks into the ceiling, five at each end of the tub.
We purchased 6 yards of sheer patterned fabric and cut it into two
3-yard lengths. We hemmed all four sides of each 3-yard panel, added
five ribbon ties to the top of each panel, then tied a ribbon to
each of the hooks. These were purely decorative and framed the tub
beautifully.
We purchased a clear plastic shower curtain liner in the length
necessary to hang from the ceiling on a plain white shower rod (same
color as the ceiling) behind the sheer fabric panels. Voila! Instant
chic.
Fabric curtains are a quick and easy way to give your bathroom
an inexpensive makeover. They are available in any style and any
color that you desire. They are also a good source for the colors
and design style for the rest of the bathroom makeover. Use the
colors in the curtain for the walls and for the rest of the accessories.
