Around
this time of year, I always feel slightly crazed, aching for warmer
and sunnier weather. Besides trying on spring clothes, I often subject
my house to a critical eye and make some changes. One room that
always benefits from a makeover is the bathroom. Spring is perfect
for chucking out worn and frayed towels, slimy or cracked shower
curtains, grotty bathmats and wizened-up slivers of soap.
People often dream of extensive renovations around this time of
year, but if the budget says no way, here are a few ways to introduce
change without maxing out your credit cards.
Paint
Painting the bathroom a fresh new colour and buying towels to either
match or contrast with the new colour scheme is an inexpensive way
to start off anew. Look for fresh colours such as Pratt and Lambert's
Dutch Gold; Lost Oasis, a very soft turquoise; Pippin, a soft fresh
green; Softest Blush, a warm pink that makes everyone look good;
or Sea Fairy, a toned-down lime green that evokes spring buds and
new plant life.
Take a large paint chip of the chosen colour along when shopping
for towels, shower curtains and so on. White or ecru is always a
safe bet but use the chip when deciding on either accent or contrasting
colours for your accessories.
Towels
While researching towels, I came across different websites that
tout the value of pure cotton. However, many towel manufacturers
are adding other natural fibres to cotton with interesting results.
After researching towels on the Web, I took a magnifying glass to
my miserable specimens and found several of them wanting.
Bathroom accessories
Shower and sink accessories such as drinking glasses, soap dishes
and other paraphernalia can come from the same set — but there's
nothing wrong with buying individual accessories such as a pewter
drinking glass or an antique soap dish to add some drama to the
bathroom.
Shower curtains
Picking out a good shower curtain is another important part of
bathroom rejuvenation. Shower curtains come in many forms but what
most people do is choose a combination of fabric-mix curtains and
an actual shower curtain liner. The outer curtain can be made of
a man-made fibre mix so it will dry quickly and avoid developing
mould. The liner itself can be made from vinyl and should be flexible
enough to withstand being either hand or machine-washed. Outside
curtains can also be fashioned from clear plastic with graphic prints
to add a funky edge to a bathroom.
Soap
There's nothing like scented soap to make a bathroom smell wonderful.
Pick out soaps with floral scents such as gardenia, rose, peony,
camellia, to name just a few. Many hard-milled imported soaps last
longer than the cheaper varieties if stored correctly in a draining
soap dish. I often tuck scented soaps among my towels to get more
mileage out of them before actual use. Glycerine soaps are the most
gentle, but fade away too quickly if not stored in a soap dish with
a liner with holes or rungs in it to allow water to run off and
the soap to dry.
