A
bathroom, like the kitchen, is one of the hardest-working spaces
in the home. If it’s not functional, everybody suffers. Keep
all of its functions in mind—it’s a workstation for
preparing for the day ahead and a refuge for resting and recovering
from the hectic day—when choosing the sink, tub, shower, toilet
and other pieces. Consider what other functions you can incorporate
into the bath with a little clever planning; perhaps you’d
like a seat in the shower, a steam room or storage for linens.
If your taste leans towards the retro you are in good company the
retro look is really popular today and you will be able to find
a lot of great retro bathroom décor to work with. First investigate
just what is meant by retro. Retro is any type of decorating from
years past. So pick a decade from the 1920’s to the 1970’s
and imitate that decorating style from that time.
For example, for 1940’s walls you might want something colorful
and wavy. Four pieces of chalk taped to a wood board makes it possible
to draw the wavy lines. Red and fuchsia paint saturate the gray
wall with eye-popping color. For décor think cubes. From
your waste basket to your toothbrush holder the shape should be
bulky and square. If you have windows in your bathroom you can use
beach mats as window coverings. For the shower curtain choose bright,
large print. You can use one of the colors in the shower curtain
to choose your bathroom mat and towels, this will create continuity.
You can make a cloth outer shower curtain really easy. Measure
from the top of the shower to the bottom. Then, select the material
you want to use (don’t forget to wash all cloth before you
sew it). When you go to the store to buy the materials measure out
the length you need times two for two panels plus approximately
20 inches for the top. The width of the material is normally a good
size so that you don’t need to measure it out. For tiebacks
use a thick cording found in a craft store and a small plant hook.
After the material is washed and dried double it over length wise
and cut so that you have two equal panels in length. Double over
the top of the panel of each so that it just goes over the curtain
rod and sew. Unless there is a manufacturers name running down the
side of the material you may not need to sew it lengthwise. Try
the curtain on the rod and decide where you should pin it along
the bottom for sewing. You should do this for both curtain panels
Once the top and bottom (and possible the sides) of the curtain
are done hang them up on the outer shower curtain rod and enjoy.
Retro Bathroom Decorating is fun and will be a bathroom you will
be proud to show off.
